John M. McCarthy
John M. McCarthy is a Principal of Alliance Real Estate Asset Management Group, LLC, a privately held firm specializing in advisory and asset management services to the real estate and insurance industries.
From 2002 until May of 2008 he was President of Liberty Hospitality Group, a wholly owned subsidiary of Liberty Mutual. While at Liberty, he managed all aspects of Liberty’s investment in Sanibel Harbour Resort & Spa (SHRS), a world-class hotel in Florida including the 2007 disposition of this four- diamond destination resort in southwest Florida and a large portfolio of Residence Inn by Marriott hotels. The sale of SHRS represented one of the largest single asset hospitality transactions in the US that year. He also participated in numerous real estate transactions, including the acquisition and disposition of a substantial portfolio of Resolution Trust Corporation assets.
Mr. McCarthy completed Marriott’s Management Training Program in 1984 with emphasis in food and beverage management with a concentration in catering service and sales. He was the Food and Beverage Director at Rolling Hills Golf Resort in Davie, Florida from 1985 until 1987. In 1987 he joined Inn Management Services (IMS), a hotel development and management company located in Lancaster, PA where he was employed until joining Liberty in 1989. At IMS, Mr. McCarthy managed pre-opening operations, sales and marketing efforts and various daily operations for extended stay hotels in New Hampshire, New Jersey, Minnesota and Wisconsin.
He is a former Chairman of the National System Marketing Fund Committee for Residence Inn by Marriott and was a member of the Residence Inn Franchise Association’s Board of Directors. From 1998 to 2001, he served on the board of directors of the Hospitality Asset Managers Association (HAMA) and continued to be an active member through 2007. Mr. McCarthy has co-authored several books in conjunction with the Educational Institute of the American Hotel & Lodging Association, HAMA, Florida Gulf Coast University (FGCU), and the University of Denver. He is a frequent guest lecturer at colleges and universities, including University of Denver and FGCU, and has spoken at numerous industry conferences, including the Americas Lodging Investment Summit, Hospitality Design Expo, and Hotel Investment Conference.
Mr. McCarthy is a graduate of Ithaca College and currently serves on the FGCU Resort and Hospitality Management Advisory Board. He is active in fundraising efforts for many charities, including the United Way and the American Cancer Society, and his band, The Cause, performs annually at the Relay for Life in Fort Myers, Florida.
Mr. McCarthy maintains residences in Franklin, Massachusetts and Fort Myers, Florida with his wife Lynda and daughters Leah and Sara.
